Lars Björk:

He began playing the clarinet in 1974, at the age of twelve. Having trained in a strictly classical tradition he began studying contemporary classical music in 1983. Four years later he quit playing, not knowing which direction he should take in his playing. He studied anthropology, travelled in Brazil, trained berimbau, listened extensively to oriental music.

Eventually he settled in Uppsala and started studying the tabla with a Bengali musician. They shared a flat for a couple of years and there were always a lot of musicians around sharing and mixing all kind of traditions and backgrounds. One of the persons that often could be found in their flat was Håkan Almkvist and they began playing together in 1989 in a band called Helmer Mudd. Originally Lars played percussion but gradually he returned to the clarinet and bass clarinet. The music of Helmer Mudd rather drastically changed his approach to playing and with the birth of a second group: Ensemble Nimbus in 1992, he began using electronic devices together with the clarinet.

Ever since then he have been changing and modifying both his playing technique and equipment, trying to create as wide a sonic spectra as possibly, ranging from the untreated clarinet-sound to the manipulated and sometimes unrecognisable sonics of the altered clarinet.
