Håkan Almkvist:Born in 1958, is a self-taught musician and started to play guitar at the age of 13. He played in different local rock bands during the seventies and started his own group "MANNAMINNE" in 1978, playing his own compositions mixed with covers of Frank Zappa, Faust, Residents and Henry Cow. In 1981 the group disbanded, so he travelled to India and immediately fell in love with the people, culture and their music. For a few years he travelled to India and neighbouring countries and took private lessons from University teachers in Sitar and Tabla whenever he got the opportunity. After focusing his attention only to Indian classical music, again he felt a strong need to make tunes and play together with other people. In late year of 1988 he moved from the countryside to Uppsala and started a new group called "HELMER MUDD" .They played a mixture of music between experimental and eastern oriented stuff, using mainly acoustic instruments. At first they played only Håkans own self made tunes, but after a constant change of instruments, styles and different people coming and going all the time, the experimental parts disappeared in advantage for more traditional folklore style of music. To satisfy his own need for to play more electric and progressive rock style compositions he had to start a second group, and that's how "ENSEMBLE NIMBUS" was born in 1992. |
